The Geographic Health Equity Alliance and Counter Tools are excited to announce the second annual Geographic Surveillance Learning Collaborative for National Comprehensive Cancer Control and National Tobacco Control Programs. In this learning collaborative, teams from six participating states will each work on a project designed to build competence in the areas of mapping policies (i.e., legal mapping) and communicating about geographic health disparities.
Project Details
During the course of the collaborative, teams from each state will plan and conduct a legal mapping project on a tobacco law/policy topic within your jurisdiction (e.g., collecting and analyzing ordinances in X number of cities and counties across Pennsylvania). If capacity exists, participating teams may code a second cancer-related law/policy topic. Temple University’s Center for Public Health Law Research (CPHLR) will provide policy surveillance training and additional support throughout the course of the project.

If you would like to take part in this exciting opportunity, please complete the Application Form by Friday, April 23, 2021. The deadline has been extended to Friday, April 30, 2021. You will only need to complete one application per state, so please coordinate with other team members before submitting. Teams will be notified of acceptance and next steps by Friday, April 30, and a kick-off meeting will be scheduled for Thursday, May 6, at 2 pm EDT.
In order to successfully complete these projects, participants will be expected to:
- Establish a team of at least three people consisting of a state-wide representative from each of the following fields: 1) tobacco control, 2) comprehensive cancer control and 3) epidemiology or related field that handles the development of statewide geospatial tools;
- We strongly recommend that at least one member of your team is responsible for, or works with, matters of policy
- Participate in five web-based trainings;
- Participate in quarterly technical assistance check-ins;
- Plan and organize team capacity (i.e., staff time, interns) to complete required projects;
- Establish a dissemination plan, including potentially publishing to LawAtlas.org
