The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced the awardees for more than $300 million in funding to support community health worker (CHW) services. CHWs are frontline public health workers who are trusted members of the community they serve and support populations at high risk and those hit hardest by COVID-19.

Funding will support COVID-19 prevention and control, including:

  • Disparities in access to testing, contact tracing, and vaccines
  • Factors that increase risk of severe COVID illness, such as chronic diseases, smoking, and pregnancy
  • Community needs that have been exacerbated by COVID, such as health and mental health care access and food insecurity

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened existing health disparities, as people of color are more likely to experience hardship from this public health crisis. This funding ensures health equity remains at the forefront of public health efforts.
