Uneven adoption of tobacco-free policies from place to place contributes to maintaining tobacco-caused health disparities. For tobacco-control programs, having a strong understanding of the policy landscape within their state is crucial for effective planning and implementation of policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) interventions. Policy surveillance, one element of the practice of legal epidemiology, is a multi-step process that is vital for creating scientific legal data suitable for scientific evaluation.
CADCA’s Geographic Health Equity Alliance, Counter Tools, and the Center for Public Health Law Research at Temple University partnered together to form the Geographic Surveillance Learning Collaborative. The primary objective of this collaborative was to build the capacity of state programs to conduct surveillance of tobacco policies in a format that adheres to the methods and principles of the field of policy surveillance.
This webinar will include an overview of the collaborative, an introduction to the policy surveillance methodology, and key takeaways from applying this process for tobacco control programs.
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Understand the policy surveillance process and its role in legal epidemiology.
- Understand the importance of policy surveillance for tobacco prevention and control programs.
